Course Objectives:

To view and practice the basics of Punch Needle while working on a small piece including tools of the trade, punching techniques, cleaning your piece and finishing. You may not finish your project in class, but you will be well prepared to complete the project on your own.

Course Outline:

  • Welcome, House keeping items,
  • Ice Breaker
  • Getting ready to Punch!
  • Tools of the trade–foundation cloths, frames, punch needle selection and sizes,
  • fibers.
  • Demos & practise session
  • basic punching techniques,
  • Order of punching
  • Start working on piece
  • Cleaning Techniques
  • “Slip and snip”
  • Finishing Techniques○Steaming/ blocking○Whipping
  • Resources (handouts)

Materials List:

  • students should bring the following: small scissors, pen/pencil, and frame

Kit Cost: $20

Available for purchase from the instructor. Each kit includes: a 5” x 5” pattern printed on rug warp, wool yarn to complete the project, wooden frame. Punch needle will be available to rent for $10 for the course. Kit is available for purchase from the teacher.
