Stumpwork Sampler – 18 Hour Class

Intermediate hooking skills


The objective of this course is to create a hooked sampler using various fiber embellishments to create textural effects on a hooked piece. Stumpwork is a 17th century embroidery technique where figures or features are raised from the body of the work. Adapted to rug hooking, interesting effects are created using wool, wire and threads. Also explored are felting fungus, wire wrapped roots, beading and needle weaving grass.

Course Outline – in 3 hour segments:

  1. Intro; layout of design; colour and fiber planning; hooking commenced
  2. hooking and wire wrapped roots
  3. hooking and felting fungus
  4. hooking and stumpwork flower
  5. hooking and needle weaving grass/ferns6. add beads, moss, finishing touches

Materials students need to bring:

  • basic hooking kit, small sharp scissors, hook, frame
  • yarn darning needle
  • backing of your choice and size (suggested hooked size between 8 x 14 in any combination); edges finished and ready to use
  • stash of wool and yarn in forest, tree trunk colours in variety of textures and fibre
  • embroidery punch needle (if you have one, will subtract $ from your kit)
  • wire cutters, suggested
  • light, suggested
  • magnifier, suggested
  • tweezers, suggested

Kit Cost: $60

Includes all materials used for embellishments; wire, felting needle, beading needle, fleece, weavers cloth for stumpwork, Valdani threads, embroidery punch needle and threader. Kit is available for purchase from the teacher.
